Essay on Independence Day of India in English 15th August 2019
The future beckons to us. Whither do we go and what shall be our endeavour? To bring freedom and opportunity to the common man, to the peasants and workers of India; to fight and end poverty and ignorance and disease; to build up a prosperous, democratic and progressive nation, and to create social, economic and political institutions which will ensure justice and fullness of life to every man and woman.
One of the things Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru said on 14th August 1947. I am pretty sure that fighting against poverty was his agenda. And we have 73 such addresses!
73 years, and still we are fighting against poverty. 73 years and still millions of people sleep hungry; they don’t have access to basic health amenities. 73 years and still 150 million children are out of schools. 73 years and 640 million don’t even have toilets at their home. And we talk about growth and the booming economy!
Are we really independent today? Even after 73 years of Independence, our society has faced some of the worst issues–honour killings and dowry, from age-old prejudices of a caste system to the refusal by courts to address marital rape as a crime, people blaming women for the crimes against them and lawyers defending the actions of rapists.
Even after 73 years of Independence our Prime Minister has to start a cleanliness drive across the nation to keep our surroundings clean, whereas the Parliament sessions enjoyed playing blame games.
At this time, we all proudly claim that we are independent of a foreign rule but let me tell you one thing we are still not free from jealousy, intolerance, and hatred towards our fellow countrymen. We are full of resentment towards other traditions, religions. It is our habit which tries to suppress the growth of the other. We are tied in shackles of class-caste distinctions, false ideologies, corruption, communal violence, terrorism and so on. We fail to remember that independence is not only living freely but also allowing others to live freely.
Today we don’t even cherish or respect what we have got; rather we try to exploit it in every possible way. Then how can we say that India is independent in the true sense of the word?
On August 15, 1947, the credit for the sanctity of independence was done by the British Government of our beloved India. In any case, our generation, 1947, is a historic year. We must maintain the sacred memory of this historical year’s sacred history. 15th August every year is celebrated as “Independence Day”.
There is no other happiness as freedom, such as a man or country. Knowing this, many tried to risk their lives for the independence of India. Even though everyone’s attempt is different, this path has the same purpose and it is India’s freedom! The British ruled India for 150 years. In those days, they destroyed our history, power, and self-esteem.
In this way, many people have got freedom in different ways and through many sacrifices. Our generation is born in an independent India. Now we have to do our job to save the freedom of India! For this, on August 15, we should celebrate a holy festival. You swear today and take a pledge to do well for the betterment of the country.
Jai Hind, Jai India
